Canine Inspired Readers Training
Become a CIC Reading Team!
In our mission to support the community and do good with our dogs, we invite you to join our Canine Inspired Readers Training! Canine Inspired Readers Training is open to all CIC therapy dog training class graduates.
Things reading dogs need to be able to do to be successful:
Calm and able to settle for extended periods (30–60 minutes)
Friendly and social without demanding attention, a paw or head on a students lap is great, but knocking the book over, licking the student, or “being silly” can be too much
Resilient to mild surprises or unexpected noises, no barking/vocalizing as it can be very interruptive to struggling readers
Patient with children of varying ages and abilities, typical ages are K - 6th grade, meaning students may be as young as 5
Comfortable being touched appropriately by children in ways that may be different than regular CIC sessions (prolonged touching, twirling of the fur, etc)
Volunteer teams who complete Canine Inspired Readers Training will be added to our volunteer list to support future read to dogs events.

Puppy Class:
In order to graduate as an AKC STAR Puppy, students may not miss any classes.
Foundational Skills:
Students cannot miss more than 1 class session in order to move into Therapy Dog training class.
Therapy Dog Training:
Attendance at the first and final class sessions are mandatory. You will not bring your dog to the first session. Evaluations will be held on the final day of class. In order to be eligible for evaluation participants can miss no more than 1 class session. Anyone who wishes to volunteer as a CIC therapy dog team must be present with their dog throughout training.
With all dog training classes, we recommend selecting a class in which you can attend all classes. Dogs (and humans!) best learn through consistency.
